unusual and very helpful project

Liverpool Womens hospital has started kniting, and has asked other knitters to join them, in knitting breats to help teah mother how to breast feed and such.
They began when they realised that the synthetic breats available to help trach new mother where simply too expensive to have enough for everyone and that there wasnt enough variety in size and shape to suit all the mothers. So they began knitting.

The official webpage and pattern is available here: http://www.lcgb.org/index.htm and it is a very worthwhile cause as well as a slightly different project to try.

Wow, what a great idea!! I breastfed both my daughters for about 15 months each, and the breastfeeding class I took was such a help!! Thanks for posting this. :)

Hmmmmm, breastfed my brood and can't imagine how a knitted breast would help

Ginny, it is a learning tool for before the baby comes, I think.

this is the original news story. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/m...de/6346423.stm

The hospital runs lactation advice classes for new mums and mums-to-be. The lcasses include teaching them how to safely and correctly express milk using breast pumps etc, which is best not to be done on the womens own breast unless it is the 'right time. Instead they are supposed to use latex breats, howvere the latex breasts are expensive and the organisation was struggling to provide enough (and of suitable variation for the women) so oen of the nurses and her mum started knitting breats for the women to practice with.
