shaping herringbone stitch pattern?

I would really like to use this stitch pattern (Walker: A treasury of Knitting Patterns) for a cardigan, if it's possible. Don't want to do it with just rectangular elements. Any thoughts about how to do increases and decreases to create shaped pieces but keep the overall pattern? Thanks. Lis.

when i want to increase or decrease (say for waist shaping) without loosing the pattern, or worse, screwing it up, I just change needle sizes. To decrease, go down and size and to inrease go up a size. IMHO that's the easiest way.
