I'm sure this is a silly question...

I have only been knitting for a couple of years and I just ran into a pattern that says to make an "edge st". I have never come across this and am not sure what I am supposed to do. If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it!

No, it's not a silly question... can you post a link to the pattern? I'm thinking they want you to slip the first st to create a nice edge...

Unless the pattern is stockinette and they want a garter or seed stitch edge?

Some patterns don't include an edge stitch in the count, but they usually tell you to add a stitch at each end for an 'edge stitch' or selvedge stitch.

Most patterns will include it and then say something like "working edge stitches in stockinette, repeat patterns rows for umpty-dump times." It just means to keep the two edge stitches in stockinette.

Sometimes you slip the first stitch of each row for a smoother edge, or work it in garter.

It really depends on the pattern, and whether it's seamed or not.
