How to use sock reinforcing thread

I want to use reinforcing thread on the top-down socks I'm knitting.

Should I just have the wooly nylon join in when I start the heel flap, or when I turn the heel? Then again when I start toe decreases?

Will it make picking up stitches harder if I use it in the heel flap?

The one time I used it, I used it for the whole heel flap and turn, then again when I started the toe decreases.

It didn't affect my picking up stitches for the gusset. I couldn't have picked up stitches thru just the reinforc. thread if I'd tried. Mine was the exact same color as the yarn, for what it's worth. Your milage may vary.
