Needle sizes
I've heard using the size of needles appropriate for the yarn. Is there a standard outline for this? Like 5's for worsted 3's for ??? etc. >^,,^<

In general, this is what is recommended (but it is not an unbreakable rule). Usually the recommended needle size is on the yarn label.
Sock or Fingering Weight: Sizes 1-3 Sport or Baby Weight: 3-5 DK Weight: 5-7 Aran or Worsted Weight: 7-9 Craft or Chunky Weight: 9-11 Bulky Weight: 11+ Good luck! Rebecca |
The needle size on the yarn label is more to classify the yarn into one of the weight ranges that Miss Moosey posted. A pattern may use a needle size different from that on the label, or you may choose to use a different one to match the gauge on the pattern, or to knit looser or tighter as you prefer. Laceweight falls outside these ranges as a needle from size 2 to 10 is used, depending on if you're making gloves or a lacey shawl.
