[YO,k2tog]twice......how do you yo at the start?

You can yo at the start; that loop will be knitted on the next row. Just loop the yarn over your needle at the start of the row.

A yarn over at the beginning of the row seems weird, I think of it this way. If you hold the yarn in your right hand: Hold the yarn out a bit to the right and before you knit that first stitch, run the right hand needle under the yarn and then stick the needle into the first stitch and do your wrap for the knit stitch and knit the stitch regular. You should end up with an extra strand at the beginning from running the needle under the yarn.

If you knit Continental, just run the right needle under the yarn before you knit the first stitch.
