a mother who needs help!

I am trying to make thigh high socks for my daughter who turns 21 this month! Please, if anyone can answer this question I would GREATLY appreciate it. The pattern reads: Cast on 8 sts. Next row: (RS). Knit. Turn work upside down. With WS facing and another needle, pick up and knit 8 sts along cast on edge. 16 sts. Divide sts into 4 sts on 1st and 3rd needles, 8 sts on 2nd needle. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
My question is this: When picking up and knitting the 8 sts am I putting those stsl back onto the original needle? (i.e. will the 16 sts be on one needle or on 2 different needles????)

You leave the 8 sts on the needle and pick up your stitches in the bottom of the cast on sts, either with a dpn or the other end of a longer circ. Then you have 16 sts which you can divide on dpns or a circular if you're using magic loop.

thank you so much suzeeq, but please bear with me I'm still a little confused....so there will be 8 sts on one needle and then the other 8 sts on a completely different needle?, meaning the needle I picked up the stiches with?

Right, leave the first 8 on a needle, turn it upside down so the loops are facing down, then use another needle to pick up sts in the base of each of those 8 sts. Now you have 16 on 2 needles. Start knitting with a 3rd needle, and you'll see you have a little pocket forming, that would be the toe, I believe.
