ISO Easy Beginner Sock Pattern

I have been knitting for a little over 3 years now, and am ready to branch out to something other than dishcloths and scarves. I am wanting to learn to knit socks. I have sock yarn, and 2 sets of DPNs and 2 Circulars needles in the smallish size called for in the patterns I have. The trouble is, they are all intermediate patterns. I do want one with a heel. I tried to make them last year and it just didn't work out. I have no idea what I did wrong. =) Thank you for your input.

Here is the easiest way to learn how to knit socks. It's a tutorial from our own Silver and it has easy step by step instructions plus pictures. Many of our members (myself included) have found this to be the best way to learn the basics of sock construction.

Welcome to KH and good luck with your sock knitting. WARNING: sock knitting IS addictive! Once you start you just can't stop!!!

I highly recommend Silver's Sock Tutorial for your first pair of socks -- her instructions are fool-proof. Here's a link:

I can't wait to get started, but it will have to wait for a bit. I am taking some meds that make me spacey and I don't want to mess up on my first sock. =)

I do appreciate all the help I have recieved from this group of Knifty Knitters. (Not the round thingies!) :muah:

This is the pattern I used to make my first sock. It is very easy to follow and I have now used it several times. The only change I make is to do 7 inches of rib before the heel rather than 6 inches in the pattern.

I bought the book, Sensational socks.. which really helped me to leanr how to construct socks. Once you learn that, sock patterns are a breeze! Also, I learned to do my socks using Magic loop - so much faster and easier for me. I am learning how to do toe-up, two socks at time to help squelch my second sock syndrome.

Ravelry has oodles of great basic patterns. This one from Lion is FREE.

If you're on Ravelry, check out my group, Moving Beyond Rectangles. We are a newbie group and are all trying socks using various methods!!
