I've started my first project using a circular needles. I'm no row 6 where the pattern reads
(RS): K2 (edge sts), P1, *K1, [K2, K2tog, yo] 3 times; P1, K6, P1, [yo, SSk, K2] 3 times; K1 **, P1, K6, P1;; rep from * accross, edging last rep at **, P1, K2 (edge sts).
What does the (edge sts) mean in this regard.
Second in the description above. SSK means SI next 2 sts knitwise, then put back on left needle, Knit 2 tog through back lp.
What does it mean to "put back on left needle"?
Edge sts just means that the first and last k2 sts will form the edge of the whatever you're making. They will always be k2 for the rest of the pattern to give you a clean edge all the way through.
SSK, I can never seem to explain it properly, so if you don't understand what I'm saying, there is a video on the decreases page. It's the first one on the right-hand side.
Ok, so my attempt to explain ssk is: slip the next 2 sts knitwise and do them individually, not together. Then insert your left needle through the front loops of both of these sts and knit them together. They will be knit through the back loops, since your right needle is now only on the back loops.
The ssk I'm used to is slip each st individually knit-wise onto the right needle and knit the two together on the right needle.
You will knit them together on the right needle.
You will be decreasing and the ssk will slant the other direction, opposite of the k2tog.
I have no idea why they tell you to slip them on to the left needle and then move them back to the right, That seems weird to me.
I would do it the other way as Knit4pie said.
The 'proper' instructions read for you to slip them individually, then back to the left needle and then knit them tbl. It isn't necessary to slip them back to the left needle, putting it in front of the 2 sts is the same thing as knitting them tbl.
I did a video on this technique not too long ago. You can find it here on my website. Sometimes it is helpful to see it done. I know it is for me when I'm learning something new.
