When you say a pattern like this, do you meen the pants themselves or the aptterns of the stripes in the fabric?

If it is the colour variation you are after, unfortunately that is going to be down to the yarn used and the way it stripes. It looks like somthing with fairly short repeats of colour is used to creat the effect. That is why it breaks up above the crotch/below the wasit, where the colour repeats are covering a larger span.

Vatsala, I'd really be interested in where you found the pattern for those pants they're adorable.

I have a similar problem with a few possible answers
I'm knitting a zipped sweater front and I want the pattern to match with multi color yarn. That's how the pants were made. I believe that both pant fronts have to be knit at the same time off the same ball of yarn so the pattern is compatable. My problem is I'm not sure how to bind off on one side and start the other side on each row so that the whole thing doesn't unravel. There has to be a special stitch. Either that or it's knit and then fabric fused and then cut and sewed into pants. Any one have any ideas?

I have the Bernat baby Jacquards Play Date book and it has a couple of pants instructions in it.. and I'm guessing because they are a self-striping/patterning yarn that you would just work one leg at a time. That's what my pattern calls for, but just like with a self patterning sock yarn, you might want to make a reference of the colors on the yarn at the beginning ( like an order of the color segments, like orange, yellow, white where as another segment has orange, yellow, black) so that you could start the next leg at the same segment of color pattern if possible so that your pattern matches up. If that makes sense.

I try to get my socke to be relatiave the same striping. So I knit both socks at the same time. I spool off enought yarn so that I am starting both socks at about the same place in the yarn on two skeins. this shoudl do the same thing for your proejct.
