Openwork Cross Stitch

Hey everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me out. I'm working on a scarf that contains an openwork cross stitch. The instructions are below (I got the pattern from popknits.com). I'm getting confused on the third row! I don't understand what 6 stitches and how they become elongated... Any advise? Thanks in advance!

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: *K1, wrap yarn around the needle for 3 times (yo x 3), repeat from * to end of row
Row 3: *Sl 6 sts to right hand needle and let extra loops drop, so you’ll get six elongated stitches, then insert your left needle from the 3rd stitch to 1st stitch on the right, bring the three stitches over the 4th to 6th stitches and let them stay on the left needle, sl the 4th to 6th stitches on the left, knit the 4th to 6th then knit the 1st to 3rd stitches; repeat from * to end of row.
Row 4: Knit

When you wrap your yarn around and then let it drop, you get a pretty openwork/droopy stitch. What they're having you do is...

1) add the extra length with the 3 yos in row 2
2) drop the extra yos by moving 6 real stitches at a time to the right needle - do step 3 below before moving on to the next batch of 6
3) move those 6 stitches back to the left needle, twisting them by moving stitches 1-3 over 4-6 and then knitting all 6 stitches
4) recover from all of this by knitting a regular row

The first time you let those extra loops drop is sort of nerve-wracking, but it works and it looks pretty in the end.
