Best way to attach knit pockets to a knit garment?
 

I'm following a pattern that calls for a knit square to be attached to an expanse of stockinette stitch in order to form a pocket. The pocket is a different color than the garment. What is the best way in which to accomplish this?

A link to the pattern or a picture would be helpful. How does the pattern say it should be added to the body?

no link; the pattern doesn't say.

I have the garment and a knit square. the pattern does not specify how to attach said square to the garment.

Here is a snippet:
Row 1: (k1, p1) across.
Row 2: (P1, k1) across.
Row 3: Repeat row 1.
Row 4: P1, k1, p1; k to last 3 stitches; k1, p1, k1.
Row 5: K1, p1, k1; p to last 3 stitches; p1, k1, p1.
Repeat rows 4 – 5 until desired size.

Finish the pocket as follows:
WS: K all sts.
RS: K all sts.
WS: BO in k. (Bound off edge is the top of the pocket.)

So I have the garment and this pretty knit square.

Do you have a picture? Is the pocket over the top, the RS, or is it inside and there's just a slit for the opening?

I want to attach it to the chest of a finished sweater that is just plain stockinette stitch in order to form a pocket.

I made a contrast color patch pocket on a sweater for one of my adult daughters last fall. I looked in my Vogue Knitting Book for advice about how to do it and here is what I did. I blocked the pocket, (you may not need to if you are using acrylic, but if it is wool, block it like you will the rest of the sweater) then I laid the pocket on the sweater in the intended spot. I made a long running stitch along the sides and bottom of the pocket, on the sweater, following a row of stitches on the sides and in a straight line along the bottom to mark where I wanted to sew the pocket on. Then I pinned the pocket down to the sweater inside the lines of stitching. Using the yarn I made the pocket out of I used an overcast stitch to sew in on using the stitches for a guide to keep it straight on the sides and using special care at the top corners so it will be strong at those points.
