Re breaking:

Can you adjust your wheel so it is not pulling the yarn in as hard/fast? Too much twist in the thinner spots will also make your yarn more likely to break as all of the twist gathers...

When spinning a single the yarn should just hold together. Most people spin singles that will have a wee bit of bias to it, but you idealy should be treadling (or spinning your spindle) just enough...

I would suggest also getting a variety of types of fibers- different preps of wool (batts, rocing, locks), different breeds, and different types of fibers, so you can have fun playing with everything...

For me, spinning is cheaper- but I buy HUGELY in bulk and dye really large amounts of fiber at one time. It is cheaper for me because I can spin the exact yarn I want, so I am more likely to enjoy...

If the puppa is not in it will be much easier as you can draft them out pretty easily, otherwise finding an end to work with (or making one) tends to work pretty well for me.

Are you trying to spin on a top or bottom spindle? That can make a huge difference (I prefer top for teaching), so maybe try another spindle.

I prefer wood needles for most projects, helps with the hand cramping, especially with cotton, linen, and other fibers without much stretch. However, metal may help to just get the stitches...

The twist of the singles is going to "move around" after you have skeined the yarn, any larger bumpier sections are going to move the twist to the thinner areas, which end up with more twist....

I have a hard time with twist sometimes too- I automatically want to make a fine yarn that is great for socks- not so good when I want a single ply. Low twist yarns end up taking me a lot longer...
