Oh... and just let me add something here, the reason for a "top down" knit is because I have been asked to knit a hat "quickly" ( I have no measurements to work with..) due to the fact that a 10 year...

DPN's all the way, ML is very awkward to me..the tricky part is getting getting the "join"... May I suggest start with Large dpn's ( US 10 or up), thick yarn and a good video...that way you can "see"...

To do the type of inc, knit the stitch as you normally would, but do not take the "stich" off the needle, pull up the the stitch you just knit and hold it on the needle, then insert the needle...
