I've made many dishcloths in a garter stitch diagonal/bias and you can use any increase. I've used KFB or YO most often myself. Just be consistent.

You probably want to use a bulky or chunky yarn. The skeins will usually say what weight and have a number. The weight number you want is 5 or 6. As for needle size... Check the wrapper on the yarn...

I use Tahki Cotton Classic. The colors are gorgeous and the yarn doesn't stain or fade as much as peaches and cream type dishcloth cotton.

I just noticed it's DK. Oh well.

It's supposed to leave a strand across the stitches. Make a swatch of the stitch pattern if you're concerned to see what it looks like.

Also look up quilted lattice stitch...

I think most sweaters we see in stores are machine knit. If there are more than one or two, they come in multiple colors, and the cost is reasonable they likely aren't handknits.
