I haven't seen 3 or 4, but 1 and 2 are extensive to the point of being a bit overwhelming! (I own 1, and I'm the knitting guild librarian, so I have access to 1 and 2.) So I'd say start wherever...

Unless you're using super-fine yarn, I'd go for a cotton-acrylic blend. Cotton is very heavy and tends to sag, but the acrylic keeps it looking nice.
