picking up stitches on side of a slipper

Textured slipper pattern asks to pick up nineteen stitches on RS.. how?? It calls for DPN's, but I am using a circular needle.. so how? how doI attach the new yarn..?

What size needles does '5mm' mean?

This is a pattern for moccasin slippers... but the only 'size' given for needles is '5mm'.. please can anyone help me so I can get started casting on? Thanks PS it is a free pattern on many sites.....

I began a Stadium Blanket. The pattern directions are from Creative Knitting the curent issue, September 2010 page 60 & 61
The directions appear to be so simple, the Blanket gorgeous.

I read here about preventing curling while using stockinette stitch...
I am making a shrug... simple 2" of k1 p1 ribbing then k1 row p1 row for the next 36"...
I remember reading somwhere (I think)...

circular needles instead of double pointed needles

Question
Can I substitute circular needles when a leg warmer pattern calls for double pointed needles like four or five of them? I really do not think i can do four or five open ended needles.. but...
