Yes, I did have this problem. I scaled down the cast on to make a Pidge (so 2 ft long). I was using Alpaca and once blocked, it looks fine.

I've used it for several hat projects and even for little flowers. It's never been splitty for me. My favorite part is that after a year of hat use - - no pilling! That's a huge plus for me!
