I'm no expert, but I think if I was reading the pattern (I took a look at it), I'd probably do what you are saying. Knit 2-8, then move on to whatever size I'm working on. In your case...woman.

I think I'm giving up and leaving it the way it is. I've knitted all 20 rows many times over and neither side looks like the picture. I ended up with a wide garter stitch band.
