I also googled mesh edge on YouTube to no avail, most notes of people who also knit this pattern are all different. The original pattern is French so many are in French.

I'd carefully follow the directions because it seems you understand and see if it turns our right. You can always use a lifeline if you're worried or try with some scrap yarn. :)

No it's just a way to distinguish those directions from the other since you'll need to repeat that section.
So you're only repeating the p1, k1.
Seems like the same thing but it's probably helping...
