Yarn Over between 2 purl stitches???

I am working on a pattern that has a section that reads like this: k1,P1,YO,P1 .... I did the YO the way I do it for a knit stitch but it came out looking like an "X" ... where do we hold the yarn...

Interpretation

Hi there,

My pattern reads:

Beg with K row, cont in st st, shaping sides by inc 1 at each end of next and every foll 4th row until there are 36 sts[

Duh ... does that mean I do the two increases...
