I-cord cast on help?

I'm trying to start a scarf (gigi from Romantic hand knits) that uses an I-cord cast on. I've figured out how to work the cast on, but no matter what I do my first row of knitting is terribly loose....

I haven't used that specific Trekking yarn, but in general I would knit Trekking on sz 0s. I learned the hard way that tighter knit socks last longer. Good luck on your socks!

Size 6, definitely. If a pattern doesn't specify I always default to my trusty sixes. I don't like larger needles because they hurt my hands, but smaller is ok. I'm weird like that.
