The only thing I could think of that would disguise it would be doing a sewed loop or wrap stitch on both edges...It's really only the base chain that needs to be disguised, as her second and 3rd...

The method I use is rotating the stitches around to different needles every so often, that way it's not always the same stitches at the corners and hides the slight different in tension pretty...

So, when I first started knitting, I knitted in a "somewhat english" style. Not quite classic english, but close enough that when I tried to learn how to do formal english knitting, it was easy...

I really like using the method suzeeq mentioned. I've used it for knitting socks and also for soda can sleeves, but it would work equally well for a top-down knit hat. Here's a link to the tutorial...
