As an alternative, you could knit on the stitches at the start of a row. When I do the backwards loop cast-on, sometimes the stitches look a little sloppy. See what works best for you.

suzeeq is right, that is a left twist, made by holding the cable needle in front. but if you cables are supposed to match, make them all the same way, the right twist is definitely different.
