The colors look a lot like ones I would use. I wouldn't take the judges comments to personally, it's just his/her opinion. Lots of people would love something like that, I think. :)

Don't feel bad it took me about 8 years to get how to the hold the yarn and then about 9 years to learn purl lol. There's always hope, I'm sure you'll find a way that suits you eventually. :)
