I knit my socks toe up and use the Fleegle heel, no heel flap needed. Plus no hole at the side where the gusset meets the end of heel.

It looks like 1 x 1 ribbing to me. To work this , you knit 1, purl one across the row. On the next row you knit the knits and purl the purls. It takes a few rows of knitting before it looks like that.

I am glad I could help. many times I wished someone would help me like that when I was learning to knit. I had to struggle on by myself. I learned to knit before there were computers on the scene.
