I'm making a pair of slippers that have an argyle pattern on the top. I found them in a book called Weekend Knitting. It says not to carry the yarn behind the work, and instead to cut it.

The problem I'm having with doing that is that...
The problem I'm having with doing that is that the yarn gets stuck on the inside of the hat instead of on the outside, so it seems physically impossible to knit the ears.
So I guess my problem is...
