I haven't used Jiffy, but I have used wool-ease for several projects. It does pill somewhat, but it's not too bad.

My daughter is 6, and is very skinny. I measured her, around the chest, and then looked closely at the pattern. The sizes seem to be about 18-20 stitches apart, which corresponds to about 4 inches...

Try soaking them in water with vinegar, then hanging them outside to dry. I've found that helps a lot with all sorts of laundry smells.
