yo is first stitch in the row???

Hi, I am starting a lace shawl that has a charted pattern. Every row, RS and WS starts with a yarnover. How do I do that? I thought yos were usually between stitches.

What length DPNs do you like? Is there a real difference when you work with them? I usually shy away from them but I can tell there are times that DPNs are more convenient than magic looping....
