Another project, aside from socks and lacy shawls/scarves, would be ... a touque hat, from what French fishermen wear for aeons.

Simply take a smallish [size 3 or 4] circular needle and cast on more than enough stitches to circle your head. Work K1, P1 for 3'. Yep, 36".

Then just thread the yarn through all those stitches and pull tight. Top off with a pom-pom or a tassel.

To wear, pull it over your head and roll up the edge. It'll fit loosely so your hair won't squish, but it is quite long enough to stay put.
