Yep, when you wrap the yarn over the needle to the back (instead of under and to the front) it makes the stitches tighter on the next row. Good for you for not giving up and sticking with it. Once you've done something a bit it does go better and gets easier. I like the idea of the knitting fairy... we all need one to help us sometimes.
