PamJ,

I find thread crochet splits less than yarn. I use Boye steel hooks and need good lighting as I now need bi-focals. I think a loose stitch is also required (at least for me it is a must) for thread crochet.

Practice will always help, and a strong appreciation for the beauty of lace helps too. I tend to use small motions when working with thread. You may find some patterns that interest you at http://www.hassdesign.com/ or just search the internet for doily patterns.
