I heard the opposite, that crochet takes up much more yarn. I remember hearing someone on a podcast talk about how some yarn stores dis anyone crocheting instead of knitting and then they mentioned how it was bad business for the yarn store because crocheting uses up much more yarn, I think they said 3x more than knitting. I'll see if I can locate that podcast, it was undoubtedly Stash 'n Burn.
