You can do it anyway. Move the needle to your left hand, cast on the st, then put the needle back in the right hand and purl the last stitch. I don't see why you have to work a stitch after you cast on a stitch. And if it's only 1 st, you can just use the backward loop cast on. Or just use a M1 increase.
