I live in a drier area and I did spend a few years carrying clippers with me everytime I worked in the yard and cut in half any slug I found. I have more problem with the deer eating the leaves and some years I have just bare stems sticking up. I found that mixing eggs and water and spraying the plants every couple of weeks deterrs most deer damage.
Diatomaceous earth is supposed to be effective as a slug repellent.
