Like Foxyie said, start on the largest whorl. The smaller the whorl, the more twist you'll get.
Treadle slowly and make sure your yarn is getting wound onto the bobbin quickly enough so you'll have yarn instead of string. The longer the staple of the fiber, the less twist you need.
