This "Knit front 5 and back 5 stitches together" could be like making a placket where you overlap the first 5 and last 5 sts that are on the needle and knit them together. Kind of like when you do a 3 needle BO, only they're lapped over. That would join if she's been knitting flat from the top down like a cardigan and it now needs to be joined to make the lower 'sack'.
