It's hard to tell from your description ... do you have a picture of your work that you could post? Might be easier to tell by seeing the problem.
If you're doing everything the same, then maybe it is just that the piece is stretched a little by it's own weight as it's hanging off your needles? Does laying it flat (which would take the weight off and eliminate any stretching) correct the issue?
