It might be easier to start knitting with the new end of yarn over the existing sts. Then when you get around to the thumb, 'make' 2 new sts by inserting the R needle into the thumb area. There's a video for picking up sts on the Tips page; even though that shows doing it on an edge, the idea is the same.
