Okay the 'waffle' stitch look is acheived by the p3tog, kpk into the next st part of your pattern. That's called the blackberry or bramble or trinity stitch and sometimes popcorn. The popcorn st you posted a picture of is done like a bobble and involves more than 3 sts. Some sts have more than one name, and some names have more than one way to do them.
