I dunno, there's nothing wrong with the instructions. Let's take it row by row -
1 - BO 4, k26, k2tog, that's 27 sts. Jump the gap, k2tog, knit to end and that's 31 sts on that side.
2 - BO 4, knit to gap, 27 sts, knit other side, should be 27 sts still.
3 - k1, k2tog, K to last 2 sts before the gap, k2tog, 25 sts. On the other side of the gap, k2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog k1, 25 sts.

You seem to have one st more on one side which makes me think you had 63 instead of 64 to start with.
