No, if you add or take away sts you can't start the row with the first st of the pattern, you need to keep it lined up, so will start with a different stitch. So if you're on Row 1, you would k5, then p1, k5 across and end with p1, k4. Row 2 would be p5 and k1, p5 across, ending with k1, p4. After the next inc, add the single st - row 1 is p1 k5 and ends with p1, k4; row 2 would be k1, p5, and end with k1, p5. And so on.
