I agree with Sue that it would probably be easier to write out each row. Since you need to do it 3 times just write it all out. Like this -
Row 1 (RS): Knit
Row 2: Purl
Row3: K3, P1, K5, P1, K5, P1, K3
Row 4: purl
Row 5: Knit
Row 6: purl
Row 7: K0, P1, K5, P1, K5, P1, K5, P1, K0
Row 8: Purl
Row 1 (RS): Knit
Row 2: Purl
Row3: K3, P1, K5, P1, K5, P1, K3
Row 4: purl
Row 5: Knit
Row 6: purl
Row 7: K0, P1, K5, P1, K5, P1, K5, P1, K0
Row 8: Purl
Row 1 (RS): Knit
Row 2: Purl
Row3: K3, P1, K5, P1, K5, P1, K3
Row 4: purl
Row 5: Knit
Row 6: purl
Row 7: K0, P1, K5, P1, K5, P1, K5, P1, K0
Row 8: Purl
You can see that rows 4,5,6 and 8,1,2 are going to create stockinette sections just like your mitten was showing.
Are there no yarn stores in your area? Where do you live? Just remember that knitting was awkward and frustrating for all of us when we started. You have to learn a while new language. And if you feel this pattern just isn't the one to learn on it's okay to change. We all do that.
