It sounds like you have the right idea: follow the rib. You should work the decreases (p2tog if that's the start of row 3) and then continue to work that edge st on succeeding rows. It won't fit into the original pattern but that's ok and it's the only way you can decrease and still keep the main columns of stitches aligned. Have fun knitting this for your daughter!
