This pattern stitch is made by increasing 5-7sts in one stitch and then decreasing at the edges of the increased sts using ssk and k2tog. The decreases slant toward each other on the following rows until you're back to one stitch. This pattern is repeated across the rows and then offset on the next several rows.

Wow. Both of you are amazing.
Unfortunately, the terminology has gone over my head a little and I might have to take what you've said in this forum to a craft store to see if somebody can actually show me how to actually go about it with the picture in hand and your explanations in the other.
