It's not that unusual although always unhappy to come upon a knot in a skein of yarn. And sometimes there's more than one! Even though it's a scarf, you can cut the knot out of the working yarn and join the new end as if you were joining a new ball of yarn. There are videos for various methods on the Free Videos tab at the top of the page under Tips. Sometimes you can do this in the middle of the row and sometimes it's better to back the join off to the beginning of a new row and then weave the ends into the edge.
