This can work as a hat. It's making mock cables so you want to start the decreases after a row 4. Don't do the next round yarn overs but begin decreasing on the p2 columns with a p2tog maybe at every other p2 (say work 8sts, p2tog). Work decrease rows every other round. Work the alternate rounds by knitting the knits and purling the purls. The next decrease round you'd decrease with one fewer st between the decreases (work 7sts, k2tog). This will interupt the cables but that is going to happen on the crown as you shape it anyway.
