Are you wrapping knit and purl stitches backwards? Combination knitting uses purls wrapped backwards. You have to untwist it, usually by knitting into the back leg on the next row. Some people in some situations will wrap the knit or purl stitches backwards to make them tighter, then untwist them on the next row. Twisted stitches do effect the look and feel of your fabric as well as gauge. It's good to be able to comfortably work stitches both ways.
