So glad you were able to create a work-around that fits your style. And thanks for sharing both the why and the how of it all! It will definitely help someone somewhere someday.
Meanwhile, I ALWAYS have trouble remembering where to work a M1L and a M1R. So I came up with this little acronym: BRNFL (Back Right aNd Front Left.) If I can remember "NFL" (and I usually can) then I can remember that B and R go together, too. This is probably silly to most knitters, but I cannot for the life of me remember which stitch goes where!
