The easiest sock pattern in the world is an inch to an inch and a half of ribbing, followed by just plain knitting for the rest of it. That way you can concentrate on learning the techniques rather that worry about how your pattern is looking. I'd recommend at least one pair of plain socks before trying anything patterned, unless you're already a seasoned knitter.
